Solar pool pumps: filtration that runs on sunlight
A pool pump is one of the largest recurring loads in a Cyprus home. Run it directly from solar, with no battery and no grid consumption during the day.
Pool filtration runs for hours every day, through the hottest months, and it shows on the bill. The useful part is that a pool needs filtering during daylight, which is exactly when solar produces. That makes a pool one of the cleanest matches for direct solar power.
How a direct solar pool pump works
The panels feed a DC pump through a controller. As sunlight increases the pump speeds up; as it fades the pump slows and eventually stops. There is no battery and no grid connection in the basic configuration, so the system is simple and there is very little to maintain.
Because output follows the sun, filtration naturally concentrates in the middle of the day, which is when a pool most needs circulation anyway.
What we work out before specifying anything
- Pool volume and the turnover rate you actually need
- Pipework and head, including filter and any water features
- Panel location, orientation and shading through the day
- Whether you need guaranteed hours regardless of weather, which changes the design
An honest note on limits
A direct solar pump follows available sunlight. On heavily overcast days it will run slower and for less time. For most pools that is perfectly acceptable, and the seasonal balance works out, because the sunniest months are also when the pool is in heaviest use.
If your situation needs filtration on a fixed schedule regardless of conditions, we will tell you and design accordingly rather than overselling the simple version.
