EV charging and solar in Cyprus
Charging an electric car from your own roof is the single best thing you can do with surplus solar under Net Billing. Here is why, and what it takes to do properly.
An electric car is usually the largest single load a household ever adds. It is also, unusually, a load you can schedule. Under Net Billing that combination matters more than it used to.
The arithmetic that makes this work
Every kWh that goes into the car instead of onto the grid is worth more than double. For a household covering meaningful distance, that gap adds up faster than almost any other change you can make to a solar system.

The catch, stated plainly
All of that assumes the car is at home while the sun is up.
If you commute and the car sits at a workplace all day, solar charging happens at weekends and not much else. That does not make it pointless, but it does change the sizing and it changes whether a battery is worth it. We would rather establish this before you buy equipment than after.
What we check before installing
- Your supply type and capacity — a charger plus air conditioning plus cooking can exceed a modest single-phase connection
- Single-phase or three-phase charging, which is limited by your supply, not just the charger
- Switchboard capacity and protection, including the RCD arrangement a charger requires
- Cable route and parking position — often the thing that decides real cost
- Whether solar exists or is planned, because it changes the sensible answer on scheduling

Load management instead of a supply upgrade
The common worry is that a charger means upgrading the supply. Usually it does not. A charger that can throttle itself when the rest of the house is drawing hard will coexist with an ordinary connection, charging slower during a hot evening and faster once demand drops.
That is nearly always cheaper than a supply upgrade, and it is worth asking any installer whether they are specifying it.
Should the car charge from the home battery?
Usually not, and this catches people out. A home battery holds a fraction of what a car battery holds. Charging the car from it empties the storage you were relying on for the evening.
The better arrangement for most households is to charge the car directly from solar when it is there, from the grid overnight when it is not, and keep the home battery for the house. There are exceptions, which is why we look at the actual pattern rather than applying a rule.
Doing it together with solar
If you are planning both, doing them at the same time avoids paying twice for overlapping work: the supply assessment, the switchboard changes and the sizing decisions all touch each other.
